Through the years I have noticed that authors make the biggest mistake time and time again. Other types of businesses fall into this same trap.
You can have all the marketing and sales tactics you can ever dream of and that doesn’t work long term.
I know this is not sexy but the fact is it all comes down to the number 1. It’s about making a connection on some kind on a personal level to each person. If you don’t then you will fail. People like D.Wallace Peach and her buddies have figured this out a long time ago.
While I am at it this morning something else has crossed my mind. For those of us who are older, we want to buy things and not be sold things. By the time you reach a certain age, you have heard all the lies and promises.
One of the keys that good authors and writers realize is not to overwhelm their followers with e-mails. I know authors are creative by nature and I love hearing about their latest work but please don’t overwhelm people. Then again all of us have the right to follow as many authors as we choose. For me a couple or so a week is fine. Please don’t be like someone recently that was sending me 3 to 4 a day! Of course I put a stop to them!
In this day of all of this so-called modern technology the old adage,” less is more” needs to be used more often. By doing that you will create someone who truly enjoys your work which could lead to a purchase of what you have written. Isn’t that the purpose anyway?
Today would have been my dad’s 85 birthday and I miss him so much! He’s been gone for over a decade now but that doesn’t make this day any easier. Sure through the years, you get all those words of ” wisdom” that tell you that it will get better over time. It doesn’t and frankly as you age missing them can become more difficult in which to deal with. The fundamental reason for that is because you personally start facing the same issues your parents did! In a strange way, those lessons he taught me decades ago have gotten me through the most difficult time in my life!
